Research Grant Opportunities – November 2020

Dear Kroc School Students,

We wanted to make you aware of a few potential independent research grant opportunities currently accepting applications.

The International Peace Research Association Foundations (IPRA) awards a small number of grants each year to fund outstanding peace-focused research proposals from scholars around the world. The mission of the IPRA Foundation is to advance the field of peace research through rigorous investigation into the causes of conflict and examination of alternatives to violence. The IPRA Foundation Peace Research Grant is open to all individuals. Grants range in amount, with larger grants of about $5,000. This could be an excellent opportunity for Kroc scholars to secure additional independent funding for peace research.

The IRPA seeks proposals in line with their Core Values:

  • Impactful and socially relevant research: We value original research, and peace activities informed by that research, that contributes to the world community and engages key stakeholders.
  • Positive Peace: We value peace and justice by nonviolent means.
  • Respect: We value respecting dignity, humanity, identity and diversity.
  • Empowerment: We value research by people of and within the most vulnerable and marginalized areas of our world community.

The dates of the upcoming 2021 grant cycles are:

  • Cycle 1: Open – January 1; Deadline – February 28 or 29
  • Cycle 2: Open – July ; Deadline: August 31

More details on the application, eligibility, guidance about what to include in your grant application, and how to submit it can be found at https://iprafoundation.org/peace-research-grant-instructions/.

Another upcoming research grant opportunity is the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF)’s US Mini Grant Program. Applicants must be a member* of WILPF in good standing. This could be a great opportunity for anyone that is a current member or is interested in becoming a member. WILPF seeks to fund programs that serve their mission and vision in building their program, and favors projects that can be shared, replicated, and will have a national impact. Mini Grants are generally in the range of $250 to $2,500.

WILPF envisions a transformed world at peace, where there is racial, social, and economic justice for all people everywhere—a world in which:

  • The needs of all people are met in a fair and equitable manner
  • All people equally participate in making the decisions that affect them
  • The interconnected web of life is acknowledged and celebrated in diverse ways and communities
  • Human societies are designed and organized for sustainable existence

The mission of WILPF members is to create the peaceful transformation they wish to see in the world by making connections that:

  • Provide continuity with the past so that knowledge of historical events and patterns informs current activities for change
  • Create analysis and action that reflect and reinforce each other
  • Link and challenge root causes of oppression, especially racism, sexism, heterosexism, militarism, economic disparity, and political disempowerment
  • Build and strengthen relationships and movements for justice, peace, and radical democracy

The deadlines of the upcoming 2021 grant cycles are:

  • Cycle 1: February 15
  • Cycle 2: June 1
  • Cycle 3: October 1
