You In a Nutshell
Sit back and enjoy the premiere of the “You in a Nutshell!” Video series for the Kroc School Spring 2024 cohort.

Making the Kroc School Work for You & Your Career Development
This section will focus on two things. First, dive into who you are, how you want to remake the world, what tools and skills you need to accomplish this goal, and how to best use your time at Kroc to answer these questions. Second, how to shape these discoveries into your personalized career development plan. This session will be hosted by Bianca Morales, Associate Director of Student Success and Career Development, and Dr. Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick, Professor and MASI Program Director.

Kroc School Marketing and Communications
Tony Campos, Product Marketing Specialist, will introduce the Kroc School communications and marketing efforts and how you can get involved.

Introduction to the Kroc School Institutes
Hear from the Kroc School’s two esteemed institutes, the Kroc Institute of Peace and Justice (Kroc IPJ) and Spark @ USD, and how you can become involved with their existing programs and projects. Also, hear from the current President of the Kroc Graduate Student Association (KGSA) and ways you can get involved in student affairs.

Program Breakouts
Social Innovation, Peace and Justice, and Conflict Management and Resolution students will meet with their programs to get to know the professors and their cohort.

Your Purpose, Your Evolution: What’s Your Story? with Mathew B. Holloway II
Kroc Alumnus Mathew B. Holloway II (MS-CMR 2023) founder of Conversations by Courage, welcomes you to an immersive journey designed for emerging and seasoned peacemakers alike. This is not just a workshop; it’s a guide to help you discover, create, and authentically share your narrative to better connect with your Kroc experience, your community, and yourself.

Peacemaker Postcards
While knowing you are surrounded by your Kroc School community, envision for yourself how you would like to remake the world. Write a postcard to your future self with your current intentions and visions for your time in your academic program and beyond. You will be returned this postcard at the end of your Kroc School journey when you graduate.

KIPJ Building and Campus Tour (Optional)
Join Bianca Morales and Hilary Beggs as they walk you through the Kroc Institute of Peace and Justice building and across campus to become acquainted with the buildings, offices, and centers at USD.  The tour will end at La Gran Terraza on the east side of campus.

2024 Winter Celebration
End the day with the annual Winter Celebration reception hosted in La Gran Terraza at the Hahn University Center.  Please join us for this annual event where we celebrate the start of the spring semester and welcome our incoming cohort (you!). We invite the entire Kroc community: students, alumni, faculty, administrators, staff, and our campus partners, to mix and mingle over appetizers and drinks! Make sure to RSVP before Wednesday, January 24.

FAQs About Orientation

What is the face-covering policy for orientation?
USD has made face coverings in indoor spaces optional for everyone. For more information on USD’s health and safety updates, please review the COVID-19 Campus Action Plan.

What is the suggested attire for orientation?
Attire for all orientation events is casual. Please bring layers as room temperatures cannot be changed. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes if you’re participating in the campus tour.

Should I bring my reusable water bottle?
Yes! Please bring a reusable water bottle — no water will be served during orientation. We encourage our students to refill their water in the multiple bottle-filling stations in the building.

What devices do I need?
Students may use their device or laptop during orientation to participate in sessions, but devices won’t be required. If you bring a device, please be sure it is charged and you bring your power cord. You will need to connect to the USD Wi-Fi, eduroam, to participate.

What should I expect for parking at USD during orientation?
Parking will be limited during orientation. Please allow ample time — we suggest at least 30 minutes ahead of the start time — to search for parking in the West Parking Structure and take the USD Tram Service to the Kroc IPJ Building. Parking underneath the Kroc IPJ building is not permitted for USD students except for reserved parking spots for those who carpool. For more information about USD parking, please visit this resource for students.

I’m riding my bike to campus — where can I lock it up?
USD worked with Park-a-Bike to install new bike racks as a two-phase upgrade to increase bike parking and bike safety on campus. The increase in bike parking spaces is to encourage students and staff to commute to campus through cycling and alternative transportation. You can also check out a bike for free from the USD Bike Library! Review bike safety tips before you ride.

Where can I find more information about alternative transportation?
Student and employee commuting comprises 27% of USD’s total carbon footprint. Multiple modes of transportation can help contribute to reducing USD’s impact on the environment. Please visit USD’s Office of Sustainability Programs website for more information.

Where will Kroc School New Student Orientation be held?
All of the main orientation sessions will be held at the Kroc Institute of Peace & Justice (KIPJ).
