This Graduate Assistantship (GA) is focused on (1) creating a syllabus and (2) developing a reading list for a graduate level class focused on the relationship between art and innovation (and perhaps the likelihood that creativity and collaboration are the bridge between these sectors).

This GAship will involve lots of independent work as you find relevant syllabi and reading, and brainstorm appropriate assignments, and so forth.

Number of Hours:

Faculty Supervisor: Janice Deaton

Description/ Duties and Responsibilities:
Professor Deaton is teaching the San Diego Practicum with a focus on artivism in the Borderlands, and is looking for a graduate assistant to help with research as well as social media campaigns. This class will be a dynamic course where the students produce art that will be shared via social media (i.e. Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, website.) The graduate assistant will assist the professor in creating and monitoring social media accounts as well as a website for the class.

Additionally, the GA will assist with finding relevant articles and literature on the use of art in social movements. Finally, the GA will assist with the final project the students decide on.

Qualifications:
Required:

• Strong command of written English
• Excellent research skills
• Skilled in the use of social media

Preferred:

• An interest in borderland issues
• Interest in art and social movements

Number of Hours:

Faculty Supervisor: May Farid

Description/ Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will involve working with the professor to refine activities for a new course on Community Development, Organizations, and Advocacy, which will include a strong field-based component. The position will involve communications and outreach with community groups, government departments, and policymakers, with a focus on the Linda Vista neighborhood. It may also involve liaising with USD’s Mulvaney Center for Community Engagement, and other campus departments involved in Linda Vista. The course will involve visits to and visits from the above contacts, and the GA will assist with coordinating logistics, as well as working with the professor to compile a list of relevant organizations and policy groups for use in future interactions. We would work together on compiling a list of resources and creating a community map emerging from the course for future use at Kroc and beyond. There is also potential to think and work together on a research project emerging from the course depending on the interest of the GA.

Qualifications:
Communications, project management, event management, basic library, and literature management skills.

Faculty Supervisor: May Farid

Description/Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will involve working with the professor on an ongoing research project on transnational environment advocacy by INGOs. This stage of the project involves researching cases for on-the-ground fieldwork to take place over the coming months. The GA will work with me to map out enterprises, stakeholders, and environmental issues in three research sites, starting with Indonesia, then Turkey, and finally Cambodia. We will use the mapping and preliminary research to determine cases and localities that will be visited during a field visit. If it is of interest, we can also work together on a separate/side paper, research project, or case study, building on this project.

Qualifications:
Project management, online research, basic library, and literature management skills.

Faculty Supervisor: Topher McDougal

Description/ Duties and Responsibilities:
This is a joint research project between the Kroc School of Peace Studies at the University of San Diego, and the investigative reporting team at The Conversation, an online outlet for academically rigorous articles intended for a broad audience. The project is attempting to leverage data from a variety of sources to inform our knowledge of arms trafficking routes from US-based gun stores to cartels operating in Mexico. One of the data sources is from US criminal and civil court cases brought against alleged traffickers. Turning these records into usable data requires us to comb through specific US court filings. The end result will be a dataset describing the routes taken by hundreds of individual firearms.

Qualifications:

• • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet programs (including Google Sheets) is required.
  • Knowledge of basic statistical and/or data manipulation techniques and packages (R, Stata, etc.) is desirable.
  • Desire to limit the negative externalities of a deadly trade will make it all worthwhile.

Professor Roche is seeking graduate assistance to help enrich the course Reimagining Capitalism and to support the logistics of the Global Executive Seminar Using Business for Good to Shape a Better World.

The Graduate Assistant will be assigned the following responsibilities:

• Perform an extensive literature review to identify and select the latest publications in Business for Good/Reimagining Capitalism.
• Write a short paragraph that describes the publication’s main findings or message.
• Organize the literature in distinctive topics and provide a ranking according to the importance/relevance of the topic.
• Aid in the coordination of the Kroc School's Global Executive Seminar’s activities for Spain.

Qualifications:

• Research-oriented person who enjoys searching databases to identify and select specific topics.
• Meticulous and organized to be able to classify the literature.
• Familiar with the tools to research at the Copley Library, Google Scholar, or any other tool of academic search engines.
• Ability to communicate internationally and coordinate events.
