PaperCut Printing

ITS is pleased to announce that after several months of research, development, and testing, that Papercut is now available for the Knauss School of Business (as our first pilot school to try out PaperCut before we roll it out to the rest of the campus).

PaperCut helps you introduce easy printing from any device – all while protecting student information, cutting costs, and reducing waste.

What is PaperCut?

  • Papercut enables the existing Sharp Multifunction Printers (MFPs) to release print jobs with the tap of a Torrero ID card on Tap2Print MFPs. Faculty and staff can also print from personally owned devices to USD-owned printers via the Papercut app and webprint.
  • Papercut also provides the ability to implement print quotas and executive summaries of printing activities/costs within KCBE.
  • Lastly, Tap2Print functionality replaces the need for PIN codes on PIN-enabled MFPs.

Where can I use PaperCut?

Four Sharp MFPs in KCBE and OH have been enabled with Tap2Print functionality. Those Tap2Print and copy locations are:

  • KCBE 238 P1
  • OH 112 P1
  • OH 211 P1
  • OH 332A P1

How do I use PaperCut Tap2Print?

When you print to or copy/scan from one of the four listed Tap2Print-enabled MFPs, you will be greeted with the option to provide your USDone credentials or tap your Torrero ID card on the “Tap here” sticker.

If this is your first time using Tap2Print at any MFP, you will be asked to enter your USDone credentials via the on-screen or pull-out keyboard. Once your credentials are authenticated, you will be asked to scan your card again and simply either select the print jobs you want to print or tap the “Print all jobs” button and your print jobs will be released immediately.

How do I connect my computer to a printer via PaperCut?

  • All USD-managed computers (except for classrooms and computer labs) will have the Papercut made available to them. For MacOS users, you may install the Papercut client via Mac@USD. Windows clients will have the papercut client pushed to them by Friday 9/1.
  • To request that your computer be mapped to the printer via Papercut, please email help@sandiego.edu or contact the ITS Helpdesk at 619-260-7900 to have the printers you need access to, made available in Papercut.

Note: Do keep in mind that printer mappings that existed prior to the Papercut rollout are unaffected. Starting 08/29/23, any new printer mapping requests will be fulfilled via the Papercut app.

Additionally, the first week from 8/30-9/1 of using the new service our technical team will be available to assist with connecting, registering, printing, or any Q&A.

For BYOD (Bring your own device/computer)devices please visit the Papercut page on the ITS website for instructions, requirements, and more information at sandiego.edu/its/papercut.

Again we are very excited to be offering this innovative new printing service that will improve the user experience for MFP customers, reduce waste, and enable more devices to print to USD printers than before.
