Spring 2020 Kroc School Grading Policy

The Kroc School faculty have voted to temporarily amend its grading policies to ease the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on students. The amended policy applies to the Spring 2020 semester only. Please note that this revised policy applies only to courses at the Kroc School.

Students should meet with their faculty advisors prior to making decisions under this policy.

  1. Electing Pass/Fail versus Letter Grades. Students will have the option to elect Pass / Fail for their courses.
    1. Students can elect to apply P/F on a course-by-course basis.
    2. To receive a Pass, students will need to earn at least a C- in their coursework.
    3. To receive a Pass for Capstones or Individual Professional Projects, students will need to earn at least a B in their projects.
    4. P/F can be applied to independent studies taken at the Kroc School.
    5. P/F cannot be elected for courses in which students take an “Incomplete”.
    6. P/F results will not impact GPAs. Students who elect P/F and receive an F will receive no credit for the course, but the F will not impact their GPA.
  2. Students must still maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA to remain in good academic standing
    1. The 3.0 GPA requirement means that students who are on academic probation cannot elect to make all of their courses P/F.
    2. The GPA calculator in Degreeworks can calculate the cumulative and term GPAs. Here are instructors on how to access the GPA calculator in DegreeWorks.
  3. How to elect P/F and the deadline to change grading modality
    1. The deadline to elect P/F is May 1st at 5:00pm PDT. If students do not elect P/F by the deadline, the Kroc School will default to the letter grading system.
    2. Students will be able to go into the my.sandiego.edu portal and change the grading mode up to the deadline.
    3. If no change is selected by the student, grading modes will remain the same as they were prior to adoption of this policy.
  4. Incompletes. Students experiencing hardship may request to take an “Incomplete” in their courses, however they will not be able to apply P/F for such courses.
    1. The deadline for students to complete their coursework to remove “Incompletes” from their transcripts remains in accordance with USD Academic Regulations, i.e. the 10th week of the Fall 2020 semester. This deadline will be firmly enforced.
  5. Transcripts.
    1. Faculty will submit letter grades, which will be converted to P/F if the student has elected this grading option.
    2. Kroc School transcripts will include a brief statement explaining the grading policy for the Spring 2020 semester.
  6. Grades will be retained. The Kroc School and the registrar’s office will retain records of letter grades earned for courses that students elect to take P/F, and these may be requested but will not appear on transcripts.

The deadline to change grading modality is May 1st at 5:00pm PDT. If you do not elect P/F by the deadline, the Kroc School will default to the letter grading system. If additional clarification on Spring 2020 policy is necessary, it will be posted on the Kroc Student Resources site.
