Torero Urban Scholars Graduate Assistantship Opening
Torero Urban Scholars is designed to provide student support services to justice-impacted students at the University of San Diego and those interested in transfer to USD from neighboring community colleges/incarceration facilities. TUS is seeking a graduate student to help oversee the day-to-day operations of this two-year strategic initiative grant funded program.

The ideal candidate is someone who identifies as justice impacted or justice involved (justice impacted include those who have been incarcerated or detained in a prison, immigration detention center, local jail, juvenile detention center, or any other carceral setting, those who have been convicted but not incarcerated, those who have been charged but not convicted, and those who have been arrested; justice involved include those who may have a family member or loved one currently or formerly incarcerated).

Detailed Job Description:

  • Collaborate with Torero Urban Scholars’ co-founders along with affiliated USD Faculty, Staff regardin the student success, support and services of justice impacted students
  • Collaborate with CA stateside colleges and universities supporting the transfer student pipeline of justice impacted students (e.g. City Scholars, Project Restart, etc.)
  • Attend professional development and continued educational opportunities with affiliated statewide programs (e.g. Project Rebound, Underground Scholars, etc.)
  • Implement antiractist, anti-oppressive, and equity centered pedagogical frameworks into all aspects of the role
  • Engage collaboratively with interested new justice impacted students and other affiliated USD stakeholders
  • Help lead and supervise department’s marketing efforts not limited to: social media, website maintenance and other story telling efforts
  • Participate in workshops, presentations and other tabling events etc. on and off campus
  • Help develop program curriculum and implementation with students and other affiliated campus partners
  • Assist in managing annual TUS calendar and scheduling of events
  • Help with program records, evaluation materials, and other program documentation as needed.
  • This position offers a hybrid schedule of remote and in-person engagement opportunities

The prospective employee must be a graduate student. Masters level or above. At present, the position constitutes 15-20 hours per week. Flexible schedule, with most hours required between 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

  • Approaches work from a trauma informed perspective
  • Excellent organization and communication skills
  • Proficient with various software systems including marketing and social media platforms
  • Experience in higher education preferred
  • Ability to work both independently and as a collaborator
