My name is Carla Aguirre Puerto and I am a first year student here at USD. I am proud to say that I am a first generation Mexican-American and first generation college student. I was born and raised in a very small rural town in Northern California known as Fort Bragg (four hours north of San Fransisco, towards the coast). I cherish and value my family and friends a lot, especially now being so far away from home.
In school I always try push and challenge myself especially when it came to subjects I struggle in. I have pushed myself to take the highest level of English classes available because I have always want to improve my skills. Reading and writing have not always been so easy but with the help of my amazing english teachers I have been able to improve and find pleasure in these difficult subjects.
Carla, I think that it’s so cool that you are the first in your family to attend college and your family must be proud of you. You mentioned that you come from a small town and I can relate to that because I am also from a small town in northern Washington. It’s important that you have challenged yourself with high-level English classes and I’m sure it will help you in this class.
