In 1891, the game of basketball was created by James Naismith, a teacher at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. The materials used to play this sport were extremely basic and simple before the game was further developed. The hoops were peach baskets with backboards made out of wire and the ball they played with was a soccer ball. The first official game was played in 1982 with nine players on each team and consisted of thirteen rules, nine of which have been kept and modified. Basketball entered the Olympics and became an official event in 1936 at the Berlin Summer Games. Today’s National Basketball Association was formed in 1950 with the combination of two leagues: The National Basketball League and the Basketball Association of America.
