The Department of Leadership Studies is excited to announce the next Leadership in Action speaker series event of the academic year and our speaker, prominent educator, researcher and advocate for social justice Dr. Pedro Noguera. Dr. Noguera will speak on “Racial Justice and School Reform”.
Dr. Noguera is the Emery Stoops and Joyce King Stoops Dean of the USC Rossier School of Education. Prior to coming to USC Noguera served as a professor at UC Berkeley, Harvard University, New York University and UCLA. Dr. Noguera has published over 200 research articles, monographs and research reports on topics such as urban school reform, conditions that promote student achievement, the role of education in community development, youth violence, and race and ethnic relations in American society. He is the author of 15 books. His most recent books are Common Schooling: Conversations About the Tough Questions and Complex Issues Confronting K-12 Education in the United States Today (Teachers College Press) with Rick Hess and City Schools and the American Dream: Still Pursuing the Dream (Teachers College Press) with Esa Syeed.
Dr. Noguera’s presentation will specifically address the role schools can play in advancing racial justice and reducing racial inequality in American society. Several commentators have described the effort to close the racial achievement gap in education as the civil rights issue of the 21st century. However, most of those who have made this pronouncement have never spelled out what this actually means or what it should entail. At a time when racial inequality in American society is increasing, Dr. Noguera will take up the question of the role education can play in creating a more equitable society.
