Homelessness and Food Insecurity Awareness Week

Dear Campus Community:

Homelessness and food insecurity are two of the most significant and important issues in San Diego.  The Urgent Challenges Collective is excited to announce USD’s inaugural Homelessness and Food Insecurity Awareness Week.  There are a variety of events scheduled that will provide you with opportunities to learn more about homelessness and food insecurity and ways to get involved both on and off campus.

Monday-Thursday, October 21-24:
9:00am-9:00pm (Hahn University Center 282)
Visit the Interactive Exhibit on Homelessness and Food Insecurity where you can hear real stories about those experiencing homelessness.  Works from local San Diego Artist Neil Shigley’s collection “Invisible People” will be on display.

Tuesday, October 22:
12:30pm-2:00pm (Student Life Pavilion, Mother Teresa Plaza)
Join us for PB and Jammin’: Pack Lunches for our Homelessness Neighbors

6:30pm-8:00pm (Student Life Pavilion, Mother Teresa Plaza)
Watch the documentary film Inocente 

Wednesday, October 23: 
8:15pm (Paseo de Colachis in front of Founders Hall)
Please join us at a Candlelight Vigil as we remember all those experiencing homelessness.

9:00pm (Founders Chapel)
Attend Mass for Peace

Thursday, October 24:   
12:00pm-2:00pm (The Immaculata Lawn) 
Learn about how to get involved both on and off campus at the Housing and Food Access Resource Fair

12:30pm-1:45pm (Student Life Pavilion 320)
Discuss the causes and consequences of homelessness at a lunchtime discussion  with Dr. Mike Williams

7:00pm-8:30pm (Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice, A) RSVP required
Meet with faculty, students, staff, and community partners to consider ways USD can be more engaged at the Community Meal and Call to Action

Saturday, October 26:
11:00am-6:30pm (USD)
Hear from policymakers, social service providers, and activists on how San Diego is addressing homelessness and housing affordability at Politifest.

For those of you who want to learn more about these issues and who have a passion to become more involved in addressing these issues, please join us for this important week of learning, sharing, and co-creating ways to become more engaged and active.
