APPLY Today! USD TRiO Upward Bound Summer 2020 Instructors

USD Upward Bound TRiO is a federally funded program that serves low-income and first-generation high school students.  Our mission is to provide services that will help students prepare for college and complete their degrees.  One important aspect of our program is the summer residential program, in which students spend 5 weeks living on a college campus.  The students learn about meal budgeting, time management, balancing dorm life with academics, and how to navigate college.  Our wonderful students are highly motivated and really look up to their teachers.

Currently, we are looking to hire summer instructors to teach at the University of San Diego (USD).   Below are the following dates:

  • June 2nd: Summer orientation in the evening at USD (meet the students/parents/other staff of the program)
  • June 8th-12th*:  Staff training (*training may be shorter if you already CPR/first aid certified & teachers usually train for 2 days, which include a day to prep for classes)
  • June 22nd- July 23rd: Summer instruction
  • -Instruction is Monday-Thursday
  • -Fridays are paid time to grade student work at home
  • -There is an hour to an hour and a half staff meeting on every Mondays (4:30-5:00 pm)
  • July 23rd: grade from home and attend the evening banquet 6-8:00 pm (paid event)

Classes typically vary from 4-15 students.  Since our summer program is short we need teachers who can teach all the days of the summer program and attend the important events (summer orientation, staff training, staff meeting, and banquet). We are currently looking for teachers who can cover SAT prep (English and Writing portion, especially), Math (Integ Math I-III, Pre-Calc, Calc), Public Speaking, College Essays for seniors, and Spanish.  Since the students will not receive A-G credit for these courses, they can be thought of as enrichment courses.  We encourage teachers to assign little to no homework since students will be busy with cultural and social events each evening.  Depending on what teachers can teach, they will be full time (6 hours per day) or part-time (1.5-3 hours per day).  Classes run from 8:30 to-4:30 pm.

The salary is hourly and will range from $20-22 per hour. Other benefits include free access to USD’s gym, 10% USD staff discount at restaurants/student store, reduced San Diego attraction ticket prices, free parking permit, and some lunch/dinners, if you choose to attend our evening events (i.e., Padres game, talent show, open mic night, staff versus student games, etc.).

If interested, please email your resume to  kristinatea@sandiego.edu.  Interviews will follow after applying.
