Laying out the welcome mat: Behind the scenes with a SOLES Ambassador

A blog post from SOLES MA in Leadership Studies Ambassador, Kalie Sabajo

Hi everyone! My name is Kalie Sabajo and I am an ambassador here at the School of Leadership and Education Sciences at USD.

I am about to enter the second year of my Masters in Higher Educational Leadership program here at SOLES, as well as my second year of being an ambassador! The past year has flown by, partly because I had a great foundation to build upon when I arrived last Fall. Much of that was thanks to the admissions office and student ambassadors who welcomed me before and during my arrival at USD.

So what is it like to be a SOLES Ambassador?

  • You get to help people. Being an ambassador has been a great opportunity for me to connect with prospective and incoming students to answer their questions and help them prepare for their journey at USD. We are able to do this through emails, open houses and orientations, and our admitted student webinars.
  • You connect with students from every program. As a graduate student, it is easy to get wrapped up in classwork and then you blink and the year is over! Luckily we have ambassadors from every program in SOLES, so any time you help at an event, you get that much more connected to the students around you – a great way to expand your network and learn a little more about the paths your peers are taking.
  • You become a USD expert. Someone needs help finding OneStop? You’re on it. Someone asks you how to navigate the MySanDiego portal? Easy! Ambassadors give campus tours, answer students’ questions, and become a wealth of knowledge regarding campus resources and connections. You’ll never be lost again.
  • You still have time for life! Being an ambassador can take up as much or as little time as you like. If you have a million things going on, maybe you only make it to a couple of events each semester, which is fine! If you’re looking for more, you can attend graduate school fairs with the admissions team, meet professionals all over the San Diego area, make new friends, and be a part of the reason people love SOLES.

Being a SOLES ambassador is a way for me to help others feel as good as I did when I attended an Open House in 2016. It’s a way to invest in our programs and the students who will join us in the future. If I haven’t connected with you yet, feel free to shoot me an email with any questions you might have! I can’t wait to see you all in the Fall!
