“This is Water” [McIntosh]

Kerry Dirk defines the word “genre” as being a tool that allows authors to successfully get a message across. She explains that many different forms of writing may all be categorized into the same single genre. However, the distinguishing difference between them are which one better fits the concept of location. In better words, which piece is most appropriate for the situation.

To expand this idea of what Dirk describes as a genre, think of a commencement speech. It would be appropriate to assume that the speech would leave one feeling inspired upon the ending. More often times than not, the speaker will tell a story that is disguised in advice.

David Foster Wallace did just that when he delivered a commencement speech at Kenyon College to the 2005 graduating class titled “This is Water”. Wallace accurately conveyed his message to the audience by successfully writing for the appropriate situation.

He tells a story of two guys, one religious, the other an atheist. Through this story the audience is exposed to how two people may have completely different views and meanings behind the same thing. The advice given by Wallace is to fully be aware of a situation. Put yourself in someone else’s shoes to view their perspective. We must be open minded to other’s beliefs.

Wallace then offers inspiration by explaining to the audience that they are currently in water, but what is water? Water is life. He encourages us to not swim through life selfishly. We ought to take a step back from time to time and understand that there is more to everyone on the inside. We must be considerate of those around us because we do not know what they may be going through.

  1. Attribute the definition of genre you use specifically, not just to “the internet”. Better yet, use, and engage with, the definitions you find in Dirk. You don’t need to say “a man named”, his name is enough.

  2. Better use of Dirk’s definition. This is actually shorter by a few words than your first version. You could have used the extra length I allowed (up to 350 words) to give some specific examples from Wallace.
