After reading Frankenstein, I see how it is a perfect fit for our class topic of technology and its discontents. Already throughout the first chapters of the novel you can tie in the articles we read by Bill Joy and Richard P. Feynman as we are presented to the fears of new found technology as well as the (at first) excitement and possibility of discovering new technology. The possibility of new technology is expressed as Victor Frankenstein says “in a scientific pursuit there is continual food for discovery and wonder..” (Shelley, 19) It is also clear that through new technology, a variety of different sciences are involved, Victor applies himself to several different types of sciences such as anatomy, (specifically the natural decay and corruption of the human body) natural philosophy, mathematics, and of course chemistry which bring upon an obsession with the idea of of bringing the dead back to life. The story then takes a dark turn and we are presented with the negative possibilities that come with scientific reproduction, which Joy speaks a lot about in his speech. This story also seems to be like a warning towards science creating things humans can not control. The creation of this creature only brings fear and negative consequences to Victor. The time in which this novel is set is also important as it leads back to advancements in technology. During this time (the 1800’s), there had just been new developments in electricity which brought on the idea of the ability to bring people back to life and helped Mary Shelley spark the idea of this novel. The horrific events later in the book in which Frankenstein’s creation kills his younger brother, his best friend, and his cousin only support the negative impacts new technology discoveries could bring. Overall Shelley is getting across the same point that so many years later Joy does, if you overstep in technology there could be severe consequences. You could also see this novel through Feynman eyes as a developing discovery and an ambition towards the development of new technology.
