Prospectus [Lundstrom]

For the purpose of this essay, I will be researching cloning and the catastrophic defects that it might have when performed on humans. More specifically, I will be investigating the biological issues of cloning along with its ethics. To begin, we must ask what the creation of clones would be used for in order to come to a conclusion of whether or not the practice is justified. This is because clones would still be considered humans and therefore treating them as property would be unethical. We must also think about errors that could be made during the cloning process that could lead to medical issues in either the person being cloned or the clone itself. Next, we must consider how clones would affect the existing world. Overpopulation is already a prevalent issue within society, which makes us believe that creating clones would only amplify the problem. Additionally, clones would contribute to a low genetic diversity, which, is often a negative concept in the realm of biology due to the laws of natural selection. Finally, clones could pose as a problem if a crime were committed and there were multiple people with the same DNA. Still, cloning might be beneficial to society and placing restrictions on it could be detrimental to scientific discovery. For instance, we could clone certain parts of the body and provide healthy organs to those in need, therefore saving lives. In an effort to make a decision of where the line should be drawn, however, we must first answer the previous questions to best decide what is and what is not morally right.
