Frankenstein Short Thoughts [Stallings]

The novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley highlights multiple problems that still affect today’s society. In the novel, the scientist Victor Frankenstein creates a monster and then proceeds to let him loose in the world. This leads to a murder spree by the monster that personally targeted Frankenstein’s loved ones. The novel highlights the issue of technology and it’s consequences when it is unmonitored. It also highlights the idea of humans need for love and nurturing in order to survive and succeed in society. As it relates to technology, when Victor first created the monster he didn’t expect the outcome. Then throughout the novel as he continually interacted and then avoided the monster, destruction followed. It’s an important lesson about how technology can start out as a somewhat good thing and turn sour. In Bill Joy’s article he discusses the grey goo problem which is similar. The grey goo problem is what would happen when a type of nanotechnology spiraled out of control. It would take over all the plants and things on earth and just leave behind ‘grey goo’. It’s a striking lesson and warning to scientists about the dangers of technology. As things continually advance in technology these dangers increase. In Frankenstein, the monster was hideous and something people stayed away from and feared. However, in real life technology isn’t always something we know to fear. It’s marketed and given to us in a positive light, so we need to take heed in the future of the dangers that accompany these new inventions.
