Frankenstien Short Thoughts [McIntosh]

After reading Frankenstein I had many thoughts about how it pertained to this class and our main idea, technology. Throughout the course we have read many different articles, in particular, Feynman and Joy that talk about the dangers and possibilities of technology and its power. The two articles demonstrate both the fears and open-minds we should have in response to the ever increasing technological advances. In the novel Frankenstein both of these two characteristics are displayed. For example, Victor creates and brings to life a “human” known as the monster. This represents the endless opportunities and extreme capabilities of science. This is a great experimental accomplishment in the field of study and for Victor himself since he devoted all of his time and effort into this experiment. However, its not as rewarding as it sounds. The monster goes on to kill Victor’s family in an act of revenge to punish him for abandoning him and making him ugly so that when people see him they run the other direction out of fear. This can be seen as a technological destruction. Victor is eventually taken over by a fear of the monster replicating, bringing to life more creatures that pose as a dangerous threat to society, in the same way that Joy feared nanotechnology because it had the ability to replicate. This novel possess many aspects that are very relevant to this class in the idea of technology and its discontents.
