Technology Final [Alvarado]

Technology has become the epicenter of many lives in this generation. Though I am not nearly as dependent on technology as others, I understand that there is a large amount potential with the internet and smartphones. My life has changed greatly due to social media, television, and the internet. The internet has helped me not only realize what I want to do with my life, but also has the potential to give me the pathway to get there.

The internet has given me examples of what I could do with my life, and what it is I want to be. Growing up I would watch videos of Ken Block driving his rally car, jumping and drifting it in the streets of San Francisco. These videos inspired me greatly, wanting to do exactly what he was doing in those videos. As soon as I was able to drive, I drove out to empty streets to begin chasing my dreams of becoming a professional driver like Ken Block. And thanks to the internet, I realized how expensive this passion is. I then became interested in how to make a business to fuel my driving career. Ken Block, in addition to being a rally driver, is also an entrepreneur and is a cofounder of Hoonigan Industries. This company produces media content and merchandise, which inspired me to think of the internet as the perfect grounds to launch a business that would allow me to make money for making videos of drifting. Then I was introduced to Barstool Sports.

Barstool Sports is another media company focusing on sports and college comedic content. They produce blogs, videos, and podcasts. I began to consume their content and realized that there is a great potential in podcasts. I have always enjoyed making people laugh, and after listening to podcasts by Pat McAfee, I realized that I too want to make a podcast to make people laugh. In his podcast, Pat and his friends talk on various subjects with a comedic spin and make each other laugh.

I quickly figured out that I could also make a media company like Barstool Sports and produce content that I would enjoy making, like comedy podcasts, and use my profits to fuel my driving career. Though I still have yet to start a podcast, I am attempting to figure out various ways to launch a podcast or share content on social media. I am using Instagram to share content with popular pages like Barstool Sports to spread content, and SnapChat to share simple content with my friends. Technology has been instrumental in helping me figure out what I want to do with my life, and is the reason why I am here at USD studying Business Administration and Entrepreneurship.

  1. Be more specific about ways in which you’ve used technology to create content. Have you created podcasts of your own? Using what tools (hardware and software)? How did this make you feel about technology (this gets to the discussion of agency we had in the first part of the class).
