Interstate Compact Town Hall Meeting
The Counseling Compact is an interstate compact that allows licensed counselors of one state to provide clinical services in another state as long as they are a member state without the need for multiple state licenses. Currently, there are two states, Georgia and Maryland, that have passed legislation to join the compact. However, for the compact to take effect, it requires 8 additional states (for a total of 10 states) to pass similar laws. States with pending legislation include Nebraska, Ohio, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida.
Benefits include the ability to practice in different states and reducing barriers to care, particularly for those areas in high need. Additionally, the Compact would protect the public by sharing data of investigation and complaints in an expedited way. Finally, increased license portability.
