Informal writing: Annotation exercise

The following writing exercise challenges students to find an example of experimental/innovative language use they are familiar with. This can be a poem or song lyric, anything. They then annotate it with commentary informed by class discussions and readings and language, discourse, and innovation. In particular, the assignment asks students to comment on writing that:

•Code-switches or switches between dialects or languages

• Mimics the ways that people speak in a written form

• Uses language in a playful, innovative way

After commenting on the text’s strategy, writers are asked to share their work with others and write a reflection.
