“Framing Science” by Matthew C. Nisbet and Chris Mooney

“Framing Science” by Matthew C. Nisbet and Chris Mooney is a short article that highlights the importance of the way that scientific ideas are framed. You can read and download a copy of the full article here.

Nisbet and Mooney explain how there is a particular need for scientists to make their complex topics relevant to public audiences. Their argument draws upon multiple examples of issues where science and politics intersect, including the following: climate change, evolution, and embryonic stem cell research. Recognizing how scientific facts may often be twisted to fit an agenda, Nisbet and Mooney conclude by urging scientists to “strategically avoid emphasizing the technical details of science when trying to defend it” (56).
