DLS students are invited to virtual Late Lunch with Lea on November 18th from 4:00pm-5:00pm. Late Lunch with Lea is an opportunity to connect with the department chair, Lea Hubbard, as well as her invited guests! Dr. Laura Deitrick serves as the Associate Director of The Nonprofit Institute in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences at the USD. In this role she oversees the work of the Caster Family Center for Nonprofit and Philanthropic Research and manages the Nonprofit Leadership and Management graduate program in the Department of Leadership Studies. As a Professor of Practice, she teaches organizational leadership, research methods, and nonprofit program design and evaluation. A self-described “pracademic”, Dr. Deitrick has been a nonprofit executive director, board member, management consultant, and researcher on major nonprofit trends. For Laura’s full bio click here!

Dr. Marcus Lam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Leadership Studies. His research focuses on identifying strategies for the sustainability of health and human service nonprofit organizations. Specifically, his program of research advances two interrelated domains: 1) the effect of organizational and environmental factors on nonprofit sustainable resources and 2) the influence of resources on organizational programs, services, and client outcomes. Prior to joining SOLES, Dr. Lam was on faculty at the Columbia School of Social Work in New York City. Dr. Lam has also served as a senior research associate at the UCLA Center for Civil Society and has published reports on the state of the nonprofit sector in Los Angeles, the state of arts and culture funding in Los Angeles, as well as methodological chapters in the Global Civil Society Yearbook. Marcus teaches LEAD 503 (Nonprofit Financial Leadership); LEAD 500 (Research, Program Design, and Evaluation); LEAD 549 (Research Design and Methodology for Leaders); LEAD 607 (Applied Statistics and Quantitative Research Methods); LEAD 613 (Advanced Quantitative Research Methods); LEAD 630 (Nonprofit/Philanthropic Research Base); LEAD  579i (Global studies courses to Vietnam and the Netherlands); LEAD614 (Cities, Communities, Organizations, and Urban Design using GIS). Dr. Hans Peter Schmitz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Leadership Studies. He is the co-founder and former research director of the Transnational NGO Initiative at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs/Syracuse University. His most recent book is titled Between Power and Irrelevance. The Future of Transnational NGOs (2020).
