Leadership exists at all levels.
Leaders have foresight, they have the vision and the ability to see beyond what is immediately in front of them. They can see the bigger picture. In most families, there is one person who takes on the role to provide the best opportunities they can for all members. Within the family units that we met at the migrant shelters, the leaders were the parents. a choice was made to risk it all. The risk included their lives and the lives of their children. It could not have been an easy decision but the only decision they felt they had to make for the opportunity to a better life.
Leaders create values through communication. The staff at Border Angels made the needs of this community known. They can focus on the important issues that matter on the border by educating the public about volunteer opportunities. One way is by assisting the immigrants that live in the shelters, through donations and distribution of needed items. The Border Angel’s staff model appropriate behavior. They are empathic, compassionate, and they inspire volunteers to do and be the same. As we learned at one of the shelters, love is the answer.
