“What is Literacy” by James Paul Gee: Helping students grasp “discourse”

While students in FYW 150 may find it challenging, this article is an excellent introduction to the relationship between discourse, literacy, identity, and privilege, especially if students are challenged to define and understand the following concepts in the reading:

  • The difference between primary and secondary discourse
  • The role of secondary institutions
  • Acquisition versus Learning
  • What is Literacy
  • The difference between Dominant and Powerful Literacy
  • What is Metadiscourse
  • The difference between Mastery versus Control of Discourse
