This semester, a few Writing Program faculty and staff members attended the Safe Space Allies<\/a><\/strong> training led by USD\u2019s LGBTQ+ and Allies Commons. During this training session, attendees learned various gender affirming strategies that they can use to support and care for trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming students.<\/p>\n

Creating a safe and supportive classroom environment for all students is essential to helping them succeed. Here are eight gender affirming strategies that you can implement in your classroom. This list was developed by the LGBTQ+ and Allies Commons. You can find more specific details about each of these strategies on their webpage linked here.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Share and list your pronouns (doing so invites students to share their own too)<\/li>\n
  2. Use gender inclusive language<\/li>\n
  3. Interrupt microaggressions and harmful language\/behavior<\/li>\n
  4. Zoom considerations (students can add their pronouns to their display name)<\/li>\n
  5. Know the policies, resources, and services on campus for gender diverse students<\/li>\n
  6. Follow university guidelines for designing gender inclusive forms<\/li>\n
  7. Include a statement on your syllabi and make expectations clear on the first day of class<\/li>\n
  8. Use people\u2019s correct name (see guide attached here<\/a> <\/strong>to learn how you can pull an accurate roster from Blackboard).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
