“Writing to Facilitate Reading<\/a>” is a short article written by George Gopen. In this article, Gopen illuminates the role that grammatical closure has in aiding readers\u2019 comprehension of scientific writing. He draws attention to the importance of punctuation, explaining how when writers use punctuation well, it effectively creates a \u201cstress position\u201d\u2013\u2013and thus emphasis and closure\u2013\u2013in the right places.<\/p>\n

In a longer but similar article that he wrote in collaboration with Judith Swan, \u201cThe Science of Scientific Reading<\/a>,\u201d Gopen explains the concept of the stress position in further detail and provides more supporting examples.<\/p>\n
