{"id":469,"date":"2025-05-06T02:01:58","date_gmt":"2025-05-06T02:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/wp-cadw\/?p=469"},"modified":"2025-05-06T14:42:33","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T14:42:33","slug":"navigating-ai-in-the-writing-classroom-a-few-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/wp-cadw\/2025\/05\/06\/navigating-ai-in-the-writing-classroom-a-few-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Navigating AI in the Writing Classroom: Links to Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our current responses to AI run the gamut: from switching essays to in-class writing only, to tweaking assignment to (somehow?) discourage academic dishonesty, to using this moment to talk with students about authorship, research, and ethics, and to experimenting with ways to incorporate AI that (somehow?) preserve critical thinking.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most of us are feeling a smidge overwhelmed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As we all make sense of new challenges and opportunities, here are a few resources from specialists in writing studies:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Writing the Class Policy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re looking for guidance for writing a policy statement for your syllabus, we found <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aiandhowweteach.substack.com\/p\/whats-your-ai-policy\">this post helpful<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Annette Vee, Writing Program Administrator at the University of Pittsburgh and specialist in digital pedagogy, discusses some trends and provides a few resources. One of the links she points us to is\u00a0 <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aiedusimplified.substack.com\/p\/ai-syllabi-policies-a-look-at-the\">this growing collection of syllabi <\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">statements<\/span><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with 150 examples (and counting) from different disciplines.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>A Collection of Assignments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re interested to see examples of how teachers are experimenting with AI in their writing assignments, browse this searchable collection maintained by the<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/exploringaipedagogy.hcommons.org\/\">MLA and CCC Joint Task Force on AI and Writing<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>.<\/strong> Each post describes a classroom \u201cexperiment,\u201d and includes a bit of reflection from the teacher who tried it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Research in Writing Studies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019d like to browse recent scholarship, the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Computers and Composition<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has published some nice classroom-based studies, although this early wave of research seems to focus mainly on teacher interviews and student reflections. See their two special issues:<\/span>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www-sciencedirect-com.sandiego.idm.oclc.org\/special-issue\/10D1R6GRTRV\"><i>Composing with AI<\/i><\/a><\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(May 2024) and <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/journal\/computers-and-composition\/vol\/74\/suppl\/C\"><i>Digital and Multimodal Composition in the Era of Artificial Intelligence<\/i><\/a> <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(November 2024). Rhetoricians are also responding to the challenge in a special issue of <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1080\/02773945.2024.2343264?src=getftr&amp;utm_source=sciencedirect_contenthosting&amp;getft_integrator=sciencedirect_contenthosting\">Rhetoric Society Quarterly (2024)<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, in writing that tends to lean more toward theory.
