Ms. Nadine Gordimer’s speech (at the UN)
In her address to the United Nations about its Development Program (UNDP), Gordimer highlights the achievements of human rights champions throughout the globe under the auspices of the Millennium Development Goals. Gordimer underscores the crucial role of local partners in leading and supporting effective humanitarian work as well as the importance of the advent of national and regional Human Development Reports as monitoring mechanisms. According to a recent UNDP Global Human Development Report: “Development is about much more than raising national incomes. It is also a process of enlarging people’s choices and creating an environment where people can develop their potential, lead productive lives and participate in the decisions than directly affect them. This concept of human development has inspired a growing movement in every region of the world where people are working towards their own developmental solutions.”
