Father Dolan celebrates Mass

Father Laurence P. Dolan, OFM, passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2018.  Father Larry, a beloved member of the USD community for many years, was 78 years old and a priest for 53 years.

In 1973, he served at USD as an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences. Father Larry then served as the University Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry from September 1974 until June 1984 under President Author E. Hughes; Dr. Edward E. Foster, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences; Rev. Norbert Rigali, Chairman, Department of Religious Studies; and Sister Sally Furay, Provost.

Father Larry entered the Franciscan Order in 1987 after serving as a priest of the Diocese of San Diego for 22 years.  Most recently, he was a beloved and popular priest at the Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside, California.

The funeral Mass for Fr. Larry will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 24th, in the Serra Center at Mission San Luis Rey, with a reception following the Mass.  Burial services will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 25th, at El Camino Memorial in Sorrento Valley.

Father Larry’s fellow Franciscan Friars said that while this is a sad day for us, it is a great day for heaven!

  1. Played bagpipes at our wedding in 1973 In Ottawa Canada and had us stay at his parents house in SD. Most generous and kind person. Non judgmental, effective, caring priest. Saddened to learn only now of his passing…Heather and Frank

  2. Father Larry was chaplain at University of San Diego when i was in attendance. He was very kind, had a wonderful sense of humor and honored the individuality of each student by helping us to bring forth our God given talents and putting them to use. He was a key part of my day and a gift as i participated in daily student Mass. My prayers are for his journey to heaven and the peace and rest of hos soul with Christ and all the angels and saints.
