His primary teaching responsibilities include undergraduate lecture and laboratory courses in genetics and microbiology. His research is focused on elucidating the signal transduction systems used to regulate development in bacteria.<\/p>\n<p>Bird&#8217;s research is centered on examining the regulation of developmental processes and global control of gene expression in bacteria. \u00a0As a graduate student and postdoctoral fellow, he studied sporulation in Bacillus subtilis and the regulation of photosynthesis gene expression in Rhodobacter capsulatus. \u00a0He has also conducted cancer research within the Laboratory of Cellular Oncology at the National Institutes of Health.\u00a0\u00a0Bird\u2019s research at USD comprises significant student involvement. Most recently, his lab employed a genetic approach to identify genes required for encystment in the purple, photosynthetic bacteria,\u00a0Rhodospirillum centenum. \u00a0Several of these genes code for signal transduction factors and Bird is now working to determine how they contribute to the timely initiation of cyst development.\u00a0\u00a0Bird has co-authored research and review articles have appeared in various journals including\u00a0Molecular Microbiology, Journal of Molecular Biology\u00a0and\u00a0Cell.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>TUESDAY, JANUARY 12, 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-180\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/u3aresources\/files\/2021\/01\/Fandango-Poster-1-scaled-1-218x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"158\" height=\"214\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Topic:\u00a0 Fandango at the Wall, a documentary film<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Varda Bar-Kar (director)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Award-winning activist director Varda Bar-Kar has directed an array of productions, including documentaries, episodic television, short films, and viral branded content.\u00a0 She is an activist filmmaker focusing her lens on meaningful stories exploring the breadth and diversity of the human condition. She faces society\u2019s challenges with an uplifting approach that speaks into possibility.\u00a0 Varda transitioned into directing after working as a Script Supervisor for maverick feature directors like Jim Jarmusch, Wayne Wang, and Carroll Ballard.\u00a0She developed her directing voice creating scripted short films, including the festival-winning\u00a0<em>Window\u00a0<\/em>starring Louis Gossett, Jr.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Window<\/em>\u00a0screened at Cannes and aired across the United States on local affiliate stations in honor of Black History Month.\u00a0 Varda\u2019s new music documentary\u00a0<em>Fandango at the Wall<\/em>\u00a0(Tiger Turn and Sony Music Latin) has been picked up by HBO.\u00a0<em>Fandango at the Wall<\/em>\u00a0is an exuberant feature music documentary that follows masterful son jarocho musicians from Veracruz, Mexico to the United States-Mexico border where they join renowned New York Maestro Arturo O\u2019Farrill and his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra for a transformational music festival taking place on both sides of the border. Varda\u2019s documentary feature\u00a0<em>Big Voice\u00a0<\/em>screened at the United States Capitol in advocacy for Arts Education, broadcast on PBS winning a Bronze Telly Award,\u00a0and streamed on Netflix.<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0Her\u00a0documentary\u00a0<em>A Million Spokes<\/em> following a select group of cyclists riding\u00a0across the state of Iowa in\u00a0the largest, longest,\u00a0oldest,\u00a0bike tour in the world called Ragbrai.\u00a0\u00a0<em>A Million Spokes\u00a0<\/em>aired nationally on the Documentary Channel.<\/p>\n<p>Also joining Ms. Bar-Kar on the panel are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jorge Francisco Castillo<br \/>\n<\/strong>Born in 1959, Jorge Castillo grew up in the City of Juarez, Mexico. He was inspired at an early age by his grandfather, Beto &#8211; who was a professional jazz &amp; orchestral trumpet player. Jorge is a professional classical guitar player, having received his first training at home at age nine. He graduated from the University of Texas El Paso. During this time at UTEP, Jorge worked at the music library where he developed an interest in the librarianship career. Later, he became a professional librarian for more than 30 years, until 2017. During this time at the library, he was always involved in music; drawn to performing in some way, whether with friends or family. In 2006, Jorge was introduced to the fandango culture but it was not until the summer of 2007, after hearing the group Quemayama, from Veracruz, that he got a much better grip of its essence. This drove him to become the founder of the Fandango Fronterizo in 2008, held annually on the border of Tijuana and San Diego.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arturo O\u2019Farrill<br \/>\n<\/strong>Pianist, composer, and educator, Arturo was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City.\u00a0\u00a0 He received his formal musical education at the Manhattan School of Music and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. Arturo\u2019s professional career began with the Carla Bley Band and continued as a solo performer with a wide spectrum of artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, and Harry Belafonte. Arturo is a member of the faculties of both the Manhattan School of Music and the School of Jazz at the New School. In 2007, he founded the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the performance, education, and preservation of Afro Latin music.\u00a0 In December 2010 Arturo traveled with the original Chico O\u2019Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra to Cuba, returning his father\u2019s musicians to his homeland.\u00a0 He continues to travel to Cuba regularly as an informal Cultural Ambassador, working with Cuban musicians, dancers, and students, bringing local musicians from Cuba to the US and American musicians to Cuba.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kabir Sehgal &#8211; Producer<br \/>\n<\/strong>Kabir Sehgal is the Founder &amp; CEO of Tiger Turn Productions. Sehgal is the executive producer, producer, and co-writer of\u00a0<em>Fandango at the Wall<\/em>\u00a0a feature documentary that explores immigration between the US and Mexico through\u00a0<em>son jarocho<\/em>\u00a0music from Veracruz. <em>Fandango at the Wall<\/em>\u00a0was<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marshall Curry<\/strong><b><br \/>\nMarshall Curry<\/b>\u00a0is an Oscar-winning American\u00a0<a title=\"Documentary film\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Documentary_film\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">documentary<\/span><\/a>\u00a0director, producer, cinematographer and editor. His films include\u00a0<i><a title=\"Street Fight (film)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Street_Fight_(film)\">Street Fight<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0<i><a title=\"Racing Dreams\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Racing_Dreams\">Racing Dreams<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0<i><a title=\"If a Tree Falls\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/If_a_Tree_Falls\">If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0<a title=\"Point and Shoot (film)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Point_and_Shoot_(film)\"><i>Point and Shoot<\/i><\/a>, and\u00a0<i><a title=\"A Night at the Garden\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_Night_at_the_Garden\">A Night at the Garden<\/a><\/i>. His first fiction film was the\u00a0<a title=\"Academy Awards\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Academy_Awards\">Academy Award<\/a>-winning short film\u00a0<i><a title=\"The Neighbors' Window\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Neighbors%27_Window\">The Neighbors&#8217; Window<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2019).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13, 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-178\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/u3aresources\/files\/2021\/01\/Geoff-Simm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"130\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Geoff Simm<\/strong><br \/>\nDirector of the Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Security<br \/>\nChair of Global Agriculture and Food Security<br \/>\nUniversity of Edinburgh<\/p>\n<p><strong>Presentation: Towards Food Systems for Health People and a Healthy Planet: How to Feed 11 Billion People Sustainably<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After studying Agriculture and Animal Breeding, Geoff joined the East of Scotland College of Agriculture (now part of Scotland\u2019s Rural College (SRUC)) as an animal breeding specialist, and was involved in animal breeding research, education and knowledge exchange. He established and led for many years a research team working on livestock genetic improvement\/sustainable use of farm animal genetic resources. Subsequently he held a variety of leadership roles in SRUC \u2013 latterly as Vice Principal Research, overseeing research activities spanning agricultural economic and social science, animal, crop, soil and environmental sciences and farming systems.<\/p>\n<p>Geoff joined the University of Edinburgh in 2016 as Chair of Global Agriculture and Food Security, Assistant Principal, and Director of the Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Security. The Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Security is one of five Global Academies that aim to galvanize interdisciplinary teaching, research and translation \u2013 across the University and with partners &#8211; on key global challenges.<\/p>\n<p>He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Agricultural Societies in 2008 and Fellow of\u00a0the Royal Society of Biology 2015.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-177\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/u3aresources\/files\/2021\/01\/Lisa-Talor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"131\" height=\"160\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lisa Taylor<\/strong><br \/>\nLiaison Specialist<br \/>\nVeteran\u2019s History Project<br \/>\nUS Library of Congress<\/p>\n<p><strong>Presentation: Veteran\u2019s History Project at the US Library of Congress<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lisa Taylor is a liaison specialist for the Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center. She writes and produces promotional materials and coordinates outreach activities to encourage veterans to tell their stories and to inspire volunteer interviewers to record them. A native Washingtonian, she holds a B.A. in Journalism from Howard University and an M.A. in Organizational Communication from Bowie State University.
