Interstate 5 and the Coronado Bridge.\u00a0 To the north-west is a developing commercial district which is home to new breweries, coffee shops, and restaurants.\u00a0 The land to the south is home to various industrial businesses and a marine terminal.\u00a0 Intermingled throughout numerous industrial buildings is San Diego\u2019s oldest Mexican-American neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-208 size-medium alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/solesstories\/files\/2020\/01\/DSC00601-171x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"171\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/solesstories\/files\/2020\/01\/DSC00601-171x300.jpg 171w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/solesstories\/files\/2020\/01\/DSC00601.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 171px) 100vw, 171px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Frida Kahlo is quoted with saying, \u201cMy painting carries with it the message of pain.\u201d\u00a0 She was a Mexican painter known for producing works which were inspired largely by identity, culture, and other issues during her life. \u00a0Paintings of Frida can be seen in various parts of Chicano Park.<\/p>\n<p>The murals in Barrio Logan tell stories of pain, love, spirituality, and hardships.\u00a0 Many paintings call out local issues that the Chicano community is facing in San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most prevalent issues depicted in the murals is that of pollution.\u00a0 Some murals show images of skeletons spraying poison on the local residents.\u00a0 These figures are often labeled by some of the local industries which border this community.<\/p>\n<p>Barrio Logan is currently in mixed zoning where industrial businesses are intertwined with residential buildings.\u00a0 Rail carts and semis pass by schools and houses on a daily basis. \u00a0During peak traffic hours, the exhausts from thousands of cars from the interstate settle on the rooftops of houses.\u00a0 It has become well known that the air quality in Barrio Logan is among the worst in San Diego. \u00a0For years prior to a 1997 legal settlement, shipments of fruit arriving to the marine terminal were fumigated with pesticides, resulting in the residents being exposed to these toxic chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>No words can express the emotions delivered by these murals.\u00a0 They provide a more effective way of communicating the pain, cultural, and political issues which this community is currently facing.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a form of communication that society needs to value.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chicano Park is a national landmark located in Barrio Logan, San Diego.\u00a0 It possesses more Chicano murals per acre than anywhere in the world.\u00a0 It is nestled under two major stretches of roadway;
