EDUC 534:  Methods of Teaching Literacy in Secondary School in a Global Society (3 units)

  • Demonstrate an understanding of global awareness and intercultural competency and incorporate their knowledge and skills into their teaching practice by employing culturally-responsive teaching methods.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of curricular reform and comparative studies in order to become future teacher leaders who will educate children about global cultures and peace/social justice education issues. 
  • Demonstrate an ability to work with linguistically and culturally diverse people.
EDUC 558XB- Introduction to the Nature of Language and Linguistics (3 units)
(Required for Multiple, Single Subject and Masters Credential Cohort Programs)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of features of English phonology (e.g., phonemes, intonation patterns, pitch, modulation), and the ability to help English Learners distinguish, identify and manipulate phonemes of English with a focus on transferable and non- transferable phonemes with a focus on features that may inhibit communication for different language groups.
  • Develop lesson plans based on the linguistic features identified through contrastive analysis and student assessment to be possible areas of difficulty for the English learners from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Write a reflection includes learning from the project that demonstrates an understanding of student language backgrounds and its possible transfer into the English language
EDUC 542-Psychological Foundations of Teaching Models in Global/International Bilingual Classrooms (Bilingual Spanish Emphasis) (3 units)

  • Demonstrate an understanding of identification, placement, assessment, service, and re-designation process for second language learners in the U.S and in other countries.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the professional, legal, and ethical obligation as a bilingual teacher when working with English Language Learners from various cultural groups.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of global awareness and intercultural competency and incorporate their knowledge and skills into their teaching practice by teaching about world cultures and peoples.’
  • Demonstrate and understanding of curricular reform in order to become future teacher leaders who will educate children about global cultures, peace education issues, and the world’s language and culturally diverse people.          
EDUC 581- Philosophical and Multicultural Foundations of Education in a Global Society (3 units)

  • Learn about the value and historical roots of service learning in a democratic society. 
  • Develop a greater appreciation and respect for cultural variations as well as group and individual differences:  Black, Latinos, Native American, Europeans, Asian, and Middle Eastern. 
  • Understand the socio-historical and legal origins of migration and immigration patterns as they relate to assimilation, accommodation, acculturation, pluralism and intergroup differences. 
  • Write an integrative essay about her/ his multicultural competency development.  
  • Investigate bilingual research and practices, which support effective teaching practices and the use of the practices among students of diverse cultures, language, gender, ethnicity, race and individuals with special needs.

EDUC 584- Methods of Teaching English Language and Academic Development in Crosscultural Contexts (3 units)

  • Identify inclusive, unified caring and democratic learning communities that value all individuals regardless of background or ability by analyzing the US educational system and in comparison with other countries.
  •  Demonstrate an understanding of diverse backgrounds and varying languages, communication and cognitive abilities by using assessment techniques and tools appropriate for different individuals.
  •  Demonstrate knowledge of equal access issues affecting English language learners/minority students in the United States and internationally by engaging in discussions and answering to questions from readings.
EDUC 585 Elementary Curriculum Methods for Global Classrooms (6 units)

EDSP 589- Healthy Environments and Inclusive Education in a Global Society (3 units)

  • Discuss respectful and productive strategies required for positive communications and effective relations with all students, their families and community members relative to student well being, considering diversity in family structures, cultures and child rearing practices.
  • Identify strategies to create positive, inclusive climates of instruction for all special populations in the General Education classroom.
EDUC 591-Student Teaching Seminar (3 units)

  • Examine and reflect on the needs of special populations and how student teachers can have an impact while student teaching.
  • Review current professional, legal, and ethical obligations and critical educational issues that are important to the field of education such as professional development and organizations, school resources, education law, and school governance.
