Since we did not want to dump this by-product into the waste bottle. We decided to use glycerol to make glycerin soap! Glycerin soap is a kind of soap which is useful for people with sensitive, easily irritated skin because it prevents skin dryness with its moisturizing properties.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-164 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/sdpollutiontrackers\/files\/2018\/03\/FullSizeRender-2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 300\">Clear, amber color with thick texture glycerol we collected from waste oil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-166 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/sdpollutiontrackers\/files\/2018\/03\/soap-300x266.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"352\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/sdpollutiontrackers\/files\/2018\/03\/soap-300x266.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/sdpollutiontrackers\/files\/2018\/03\/soap-768x680.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/sdpollutiontrackers\/files\/2018\/03\/soap-600x531.png 600w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/sdpollutiontrackers\/files\/2018\/03\/soap.png 931w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Making Glycerin soap with Glycerol is not hard, but have to spend long time on heating up the ingredients. Below is the simplified procedure. It takes longer time to wait on heating (total of more than 1 hour) than the actual steps.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-163 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/sdpollutiontrackers\/files\/2018\/03\/FullSizeRender-3-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To be creative when we were adding the food dye, we decided to separate our glycerin mixture into two portions and each portion is added in different color. We was hoping to make a double layer soap, more like a double layer jello.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-162 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/sdpollutiontrackers\/files\/2018\/03\/FullSizeRender-4-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>But when we poured it into the mold, two color got mixed together. And because the green color soap is so dark that it was not translucent, the orange portion \u201cswallow\u201d into the green portion.<\/p>\n<p>See, it became a completely green soap\u2026 with bubbles on top.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After a week of waiting, we finally retrieve the soap, although it solidified, it much more like a jello-looking texture rather than solid piece of soap. It feels very moist and easy to break. In terms of its scents, it smells very similar to the essence oil we added in with a little touch of the vegetable oil smell.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-161 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/sdpollutiontrackers\/files\/2018\/03\/FullSizeRender-5-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"207\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-160\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/sdpollutiontrackers\/files\/2018\/03\/FullSizeRender-6-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"211\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-168\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/sdpollutiontrackers\/files\/2018\/03\/soap-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"317\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In our class, weirdly, no one has successfully make a harden soap, some of the samples are jello-like and some did not solidify at all. We have no idea why this happened. Or maybe, we should look into the factor of turning glycerol produced from waste food oil into jello-looking texture of soap.
