Education Dept. Takes Stand on Anti-Semitism That Could Draw It Into Free-Speech Fights

In a move being hailed by some Jewish organizations as a major and welcome shift, the U.S. Education Department's Office for Civil Rights has signaled that it plans to step up its efforts to protect Jewish students from anti-Semitism under a federal law that bars colleges from discriminating based on national origin or ethnicity.

By adopting such a position, however, the office might have increased the likelihood that it will need to grapple with the thorny question of whether it should ever treat verbal or symbolic attacks on Israel or Zionism on college campuses as amounting to anti-Semitic acts that violate federal anti-discrimination laws. Noted author and journalist, Ed Vullimany, will be on campus Wednesday, October 27 at 3 p.m. in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice presenting his most recent book "Amexica: War Along the Borders," which tells the fascinating story of his travels along the entire U.S.-Mexico border. In his book, Vullimany,  gives an account of the horrific narco-war that has unfolded in the world's busiest international border, documenting the impact this grotesque war is having on communities all across the border. N.J. Court Says Public Law-School Clinics Aren’t Immune From Open-Records Law

From the October 27 Chronicle of Higher Education:

Defying the wishes of several national associations dealing with legal education, an appeals court in New Jersey has denied the legal clinics of that state's public law schools immunity from its open-records law, exposing them to new document requests that could greatly complicate their work.
