Amanda Thomas of the Associated Press reports that even though we thought we had long ago dispelled the reputation of librarians as "the little old white lady with her hair in a bun and glasses on a chain around her neck, "shushing" noisy people," it still seems to resonate with a lot of people. She says that Deborah Lilton, an African American student at the University of Alabama, represents a more modern image as "one of a disproportionately small number of minorities entering" academic librarianship.
"Until this perception is changed, people who would make fine librarians will undoubtedly choose another career choice," said Lilton, who decided to pursue her degree after teaching English as an adjunct faculty member. Read the whole article here.
