Sarod Recital by Rajiv Taranath (Sept. 28)

An evening of HIndustani music with internationally acclaimed artists Rajeev Taranath, sarod, and Abhiman Kaushal, tabla, at MiraCosta College. Rajeev Taranath is today one of the leading exponents of the sarod. Last time this course was taught, Taranath did a concert at the same venue. The students thought it was a great experience. Friday, Sept. 28, 7:30pm, MiraCosta College, $8 student admission. South Indian Citravina and Violin Concert (Oct. 5)

A chance to hear three brilliant performers at the top of the contemporary Karnatic music scene: Citravina Ravi Kiran (citravina), Delhi Sunder Rajan (violin), and Trichy Sankaran (mridangam). Friday, Oct 5, 7:30pm, UCSD. Information at the Indian Fine Arts Academy website.


Tabla Solo Concert with Abhiman Kaushal (Oct. 20)

This should be an exciting performance by a world-class North Indian percussionist, Abhiman Kaushal, tabla player for Grammy Awarded White Sun II. Assisted by Miles Shrewsbery, tabla; Vignesh Manohar, vocal; and Ashutosh Sohoni, harmonium. Saturday October 20, 2018 at 7:30pm, Persian Cultural Center of San Diego.


San Diego Raga Collective Concert (Oct. 27)

This evening performance will feature Will Marsh (sitar), Adtiya Sharma (vocal), and Miles Shrewsbery (tabla). All are celebrated performing artists representing the next generation of Hindustani musicians. The program will feature solo presentations by each artist and a combined trio performance finale. Kathin Ceremony at Wat Thai Escondido (Nov. 4)

The Kathin ceremony celebrates the end of the rainy season, when laypeople present new robes to the monks. Sunday, Nov. 4, 10am, at Wat Thai, Escondido.


Deepavali Lakshmi Puja (Nov. 6)

The Shiva-Vishnu Temple of San Diego (a.k.a the Vedic Cultural Center) celebrates the Hindu “Festival of Lights” (Diwali/Deepavali) with a special puja (workship service) for Lakshmi, spouse of Vishnu and goddess of good fortune. The festival itself generally lasts for five days. This is one of the most important days. The main event will be 6:30 p.m,, but there will be activity from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. For info and directions, see the temple web site and this flyer for the event. Woodwinds from India (Nov. 17)

Renowned bansuri (Hindustani bamboo flute) master Pandit Ronu Majumdar, accompanied by Pandit Abhijit Banerjee (tabla). Opening recital by Srimati Sudakshina Alagia (Hindustani vocal). Loy Krathong Festival, Wat Thai Escondido (Nov. 18)

Loy Krathong is the Thai festival of lights, when people honor the spirits of water by floating small, beautifully decorated offerings on rivers and other bodies of water. Sunday, Nov. 18, 11am, at Wat Thai, Escondido.


USD Balinese Gamelan Performance (Dec. 11) [date changed]

This concert will feature the USD Gamelan Ensemble “Gunung Mas,” performing music of Bali, as well as a Balinese dance by visiting artists. The second half of the performance will feature the USD Mariachi Ensemble, which is also fun and recommended.

Tyler Yamin and David Harnish direct the USD Gamelan. The performance will feature Balinese dancers Dr. Nyoman Wenten and Nanik and Weni Wenten in a performance of the dance drama, Arjuna Wiwaha, along with instrumental pieces,
