Summer 2020 and AY 2020-21 MA in Peace & Justice Internship Policy

Due to the hardships created by the COVID-19 crisis, Kroc School faculty have temporarily revised the MA in Peace & Justice (MAPJ) internship policy. The revisions create flexibility to enable students to meet the internship placement requirement in different situations. This temporary policy expires at the end of the Spring 2021 semester. This policy applies only to MAPJ students who have not yet completed their internship requirement, and it expires at the end of Spring 2021.

  1. Remote internships are permitted. Under ordinary circumstances, in-person internship placements are preferable. Remote placements should still meet the following criteria:
    1. Have a defined job description
    2. Include regular close supervision
    3. Be in line with the student’s learning goals and professional aspirations
    4. Be of mutual benefit to the student and the placement organization
  2. In-person internships. Students who wish to complete an in-person internship placement may wait until later in the AY20-21 year to do so (assuming safety).
  3. Only 200 hours are required to be completed. However, students who wish to work more hours than this may do so of their own accord.
  4. Flexible schedule. Internship placements do not have to be completed over summer 2020. Students have until the end of the Spring 2021 semester to complete their internship hours.
  5. The internship requirement may be waived. Students who cannot secure an internship placement or who are experiencing personal hardship may waive the internship requirement.
  6. Supervisors’ responsibilities. Supervising organizations will have the following responsibilities in order to accept Kroc School students as interns:
    1. Sign off on a work plan that contains clear deliverables, and approximate hours tied to each of these.
    2. Articulate a supervision plan that includes supervision meetings on at least a weekly basis.
    3. Verify hours worked.
  7. Rolling approvals for internships
    1. As before, students are required to discuss internship placements with their faculty advisors, and submit the Internship Proposal Form to Marissa Newman.
    2. Placements will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
    3. An ad hoc faculty committee may be called upon to review certain internship proposals to ensure they meet the academic standards for MAPJ.
  8. Internship funding. Funding requests will be considered and approved on a rolling basis.
    1. Remote and in-person internships will both qualify for funding.
    2. Students should complete the Budget Proposal Form and submit to Marissa Newman for consideration.
    3. A select number of students may be requested to interact with donors and prepare additional materials about their experiences.
  9. Internship reflection sessions and reporting requirements.
    1. Students who complete summer internships will be required to participate in a reflection session at the beginning of September 2020.
    2. Additional reflection sessions will be held throughout the year for students on extended timelines.
    3. All students are required to complete a final reflection report. The guidelines for this will be circulated. This report may be shared with donors.
  10. Registration
    1. Once your Internship Proposal Form is approved by Marissa and your faculty advisor, Marissa will register you in KROC 598, the 0-unit course that reflects your active participation in your internship.
