Session Descriptions

Dean’s Welcome
Orientation will commence with remarks from Dr. Patricia Márquez, Associate Provost for Academic Planning and Innovation; Dean & Professor of Social Innovation at the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies.

You! In a Nutshell
Sit back and enjoy the premiere of the “You in a Nutshell!” Video series for the Spring 2022 Kroc School Cohort. Feel free to wave when your video is presented.

USD Wellness Center Overview
This presentation will provide a general overview of USD’s student wellness services. You will be introduced to the following resources and learn how they can support your well-being during your time at USD: Student Health Center; Counseling Center; Disability and Learning Difference Resource Center; Center for Health and Wellness Promotion ; Campus Recreation; CARE: Campus Assault Resources & Education; Gender Identity Resources: Womens Commons & LGBTQ + Allies Commons. Participants are encouraged to access the Student Wellness Resource Guide for additional information.

Peacemaker Postcards: How I Will Remake the World
Students will be led through a moment for personal reflection. While knowing you are surrounded by your Kroc School community, envision for yourself how you would like to remake the world. Write a postcard to your future self with your current intentions and visions for your time in your academic program and beyond. How will you play your part in remaking our world?

The Kroc School will mail this postcard to you toward the end of your academic program, and we will hold faculty-led reflection sessions in which we look back at these postcards. Please input the address where you would like your postcard to be sent when you graduate.

Graduate School Writing Workshop
The SOLES Graduate Student Writing Center is a virtual space designed to accommodate both online or on-campus graduate students for whom distance or busy schedules conflict with coming to campus. The Center’s free web-based service provides students with feedback on digital versions of their assignments and offers one-on-one coaching sessions via remote conferencing. This session will explain how to take advantage of the Center, review upcoming workshops, and more.

Library Services Introduction
Helen K. and James S. Copley Library has resources and dedicated librarians for all of your research needs. Alma C. Ortega, PhD, is the Kroc School of Peace Librarian Liaison and will introduce to you the library’s online resources, including the Kroc School’s library research guide. She will also demonstrate some search strategies to facilitate your research process for future assignments and projects.

Kroc School Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Presentation
The Kroc School and the University of San Diego are committed to creating an inclusive community that fosters equity, understanding, and respect among our students, faculty, staff, and administrators. The Kroc DEI Working Group, made up of current students, staff, faculty, and alumni, will present their initiatives and explore ways for incoming students to participate in their efforts.

USD Career Services Presentation
Overview of the Career Development Center services for Kroc School students and alumni including an interactive demonstration of how to use TEAM and LinkedIn to network with the USD community.
