Dear Incoming Class,
We are so excited for you to join us this fall! We have found that a great fall starts with a great summer. Because we’re all coming from different backgrounds and experiences, summer reading helps us get on the same page, build a shared set of experiences, and prepare for the term.
We have two categories of summer reading books. The first list (summer reading) introduces you to important themes. The second list (fall required reading) offers a chance to dive into course reading.
Summer Readings
To give you a chance to engage with ideas and each other during the term, we will read two books and discuss them via Zoom. These Zoom book groups will be optional.
- Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson, Spiegel & Grau, 2014 (ABE Books, Amazon, Author website, watch the movie) –
- Book Discussion via Zoom on Thursday, August 4, 3-4pm PDT
- Think Again, Adam Grant, Penguin, 2021 (ABE Books, Amazon) –
- Book Discussion via Zoom on Wednesday, August 10, 2-3pm PDT
Fall Required Readings
These are books that will be central to this year’s Foundations course, and we invite you to get a jump-start on the Fall’s required readings now.
- How Change Happens, Duncan Green, Oxford UP, 2016 (read online for free, ABE Books)
- Wicked Problems, Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick, Doug Irvin-Erickson, Ernesto Verdeja (eds), Oxford UP, 2022 (Oxford UP + Discount Code: ASFLYQ6, Amazon).
