Kroc IPJ Dialogue Series: Changing the Conversation. Creating Solidarity.

This summer the Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (Kroc IPJ) will facilitate a series of online dialogues where, initially the Kroc School community, and later the broader USD community, can come together for difficult reflections on anti-black violence, systemic racism, and the fundamental inequalities that the pandemic has revealed. The dialogues will be a place to listen, to learn, to build solidarity, and to prepare ourselves to create the change we want to see. The dialogues will be designed and facilitated by KishaLynn Elliott of the Monarch School and Michael Fryer of the Kroc School.

About the Facilitators

KishaLynn Elliott is the Director of Special Projects at the Monarch School—a K-12 public school in San Diego that serves a population of students who are all impacted by homelessness. As a licensed restorative practices trainer, KishaLynn developed a framework for school-wide implementation of restorative practices at Monarch which emphasizes student leadership and engagement. She has trained and engaged 20% of Monarch’s high school students as “Royal Restoratives” who lead events to build community and facilitate peer mediation conversations to repair harm. KishaLynn is an author, speaker, certified coach and facilitator. She has worked with individuals, schools and organizations across the county, including the University of California San Diego and Purdue University.

Michael Fryer is a Professor of Practice at the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies at the University of San Diego. He has been creating spaces for healthy conversations since 1996 when he first worked with The Corrymeela Community in Northern Ireland. These experiences still guide his approach to facilitation and how to navigate the inherent complexity of dialogue around issues relating to identity, justice and reconciliation. At the Kroc School his focus is on the applied relationship between theory and practice. He teaches classes including ‘Facilitation and Dialogue Skills’ and ‘Negotiations’. His research interests focus on grassroots peace leadership and resilience, the role of creativity and the arts in peacebuilding, and peace education.
