KROC 524 Social Innovation Practicum: Rwanda

January 7 – January 18, 2023

Pre-sessions: TBD
Post-sessions: TBD

The Rwanda Experience provides creative and structured environments for students to apply classroom knowledge to the real world. In particular, we will explore social innovation and social change through the case of economic transformation in post-genocide (and post-Covid) Rwanda. The MASI team will meet with experts on the region, and on the country’s efforts to leapfrog from an agricultural to information-based economy. We will connect with these issues through conversations with social entrepreneurs and innovators in the education, technology, and environmental sectors. Our experiences—in the classroom and in the field—will help students to better understand the challenges and opportunities in post-conflict social and economic transformation. Rwanda is a beautiful and energetic country, and this practicum is designed to highlight its dynamism and growth.

KROC 593 Field-based Practicum: Northern Ireland

May 14 – 22, 2023
Pre-sessions: TBD
Post-session: TBD
Northern Ireland is a beautiful, complex part of the world with both long-established and emerging identities living alongside each other . The political violence was formally ended with the signing of a peace agreement in 1998. Many of the core questions regarding the legacy of the past, the present and the future remain unanswered or unaddressed. This field-based course will explore these important dynamics and learn from the people who have been working to help transform them over the past 50 years.

KROC 593 Peacebuilding & Conflict in the Southern Caucasus

May 12 – 24, 2023
Pre-session: April 12, 2023
Post-session: May 24, 2023
Following decades of protracted conflicts in Eurasia, the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine further destabilized also the countries of South Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia) and is poised to leave a long-lasting mark on our understanding of international conflict and peacebuilding. In parallel, hundreds of official, grassroots, NGO, and academic initiatives pro-actively advance a peace agenda. The course looks into an array of peacebuilding efforts, ranging from government-led to grassroots and academic initiatives in the South Caucasus and its neighborhood, including in Ukraine, Turkey, and Russia. The students will have the opportunity to meet and observe the work of practitioners tackling complex questions of conflict and peace on Track 1, Track 2, and the grassroots levels.
