During this time, particular races were stripped of their basic rights, and faced discrimination and segregation on a daily basis. For instance, whites and African Americans could not attend the same school, drink from the same drinking fountain, or even sit next to each other on the bus. People of color were treated cruelly, and many felt helpless due to the fact that they were oppressed on an institutional level; they felt completely overpowered. December 1<sup>st<\/sup> 1955 is a major historical date because Rosa Parks was one of the first people to effectively bring about change in freeing individuals from racism. On this day, Rosa Parks go onto a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. African Americans were obligated to sit in the back of the bus; however, there was no room, so she sat in an open area meant for whites. Authority immediately took action, and aggressively attempted to move her. She courageously remained in the seat despite their efforts. She was arrested and put her life in danger to stand up for people of color and their deprivation of basic human rights. Her action\u2019s influenced people to stand up for themselves: an eleven-month mission to desegregate buses took place after her arrest. December 1<sup>st <\/sup>1995\u2014Rosa Parks inspires a journey of breaking free from racism and rather advocating for equality and unity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>December 1st 1955\u2014one of the most important dates in American history.
