In the gospel for the fifth Sunday in Lent, Jesus, in his response to an accused woman, challenges us to recognize in others our shared humanity. Compassion and forgiveness are connected. Ilia Delio, OSF in her book, Compassion: Living in the Spirit of St. Francis, gives us a glimpse of how Christ invites us to change our hearts:
“Compassion transcends isolation because the choice to be for another is the rejection of being alone. The compassionate person recognizes the other as part of oneself in a way that is mystical and ineffable. It is not rational caring for another but a deep identification with the other as brother and sister.”
