The Responsorial Psalm taken from the prophet Isaiah for the third Sunday of Advent,

“Cry out with joy and gladness: for among you is the great and holy One of Israel,”

echoes the words of St. Francis in his work, The Earlier Rule,

“Let them be careful not to appear outwardly as sad and gloomy hypocrites, but show themselves joyful, cheerful and consistently gracious in the Lord.”
