Making the kids “little teachers”

Scenario:
My tutee is showing tremendous progress in learning English. On Monday, he read me a book in Spanish and as we went through each page, I would point to different objects in the picture and say the English word for them. He would repeat the word and then move on to the next page. At first I didn’t think this was working, but, as we continued reading, he actually took the lead and pointed to the animals that he recognized from a previous page. I think that part of our success stemmed from him feeling that he was also a “teacher” by reading to me in Spanish.
