Learning About Cultures

One of the most critical steps before planning effective instruction is getting to know the student and his/her own native culture. By gathering background information, the tutee or teacher will be better prepared to understand and meet the needs of the student. Many times, the culture’s beliefs, traditions, and customs, reveal pertinent information that can help explain particular student actions or the conduct of his/her guardians. Such cultural information can be found by asking the student, communicating with parents and/or community members, or by doing some cultural research on the Internet or in the library. Of course, language issues can be an obstacle especially when speaking to parents and community members.
