Our course begins in the United States for the first six sessions and after that we will be in India for ten days to apply our learning! The final course session will take place back in the United States. Truly, this will be a global learning experience!
In this course there will be a strong focus on social justice, introducing an analysis of the postcolonial impact of neoliberal globalization on education, with particular reference to international development and historically marginalized groups, including girls, Dalits, Scheduled Tribes, Muslims, language minorities, and disabled children. We will examine the complex inter- and intra-national dynamics, interrogating systemic patterns of social inequality abroad and in the United States, and situating our personal teaching practices in local-global awareness. We will examine the geopolitical and cultural hegemony of the global North on the global South through policies and practices in education, such as Education For All, inclusive education, and Three Language Formula language education.
In India we will learn from and collaborate with graduate students from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), a premier higher education institution in Mumbai and present collaboratively on an educational equity project. Finally, we will engage with students from the Jamia Millia University, a historically Muslim university in Delhi.
During our time in India we will record our journey collectively on our class blog! Look at our blog to follow our story in India!
