DeRoche, Ph.D.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2022\/11\/Screen-Shot-2022-11-02-at-11.10.16-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-747 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2022\/11\/Screen-Shot-2022-11-02-at-11.10.16-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"107\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAn electrocardiogram \u2014 also called EKG\u2014is a painless way to monitor your heart&#8217;s health.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>An EKG can help measure heart rate, heart rhythm, and other cardiovascular factors giving you a clear picture of how you are doing.<\/p>\n<p>The EKG I am talking about in this blog \u201cmonitors\u201d your knowledge and teaching of Empathy, Kindness, Gratitude.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You will recall the research by Goleman and Ekman who found that there are three different ways teachers (and others) must address the teaching and learning of <b>Empathy<\/b> (add Kindness and Gratitude here).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first stage of becoming empathetic is cognitive empathy \u2013 the act of knowing how another person feels.<\/li>\n<li>The second stage is emotional empathy \u2013 the capacity to physically feel the emotions of another.<\/li>\n<li>The third stage is compassionate empathy \u2013 the combination of cognitive and emotional empathy to take action about what one feels and thinks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Michele Borba, internationally known speaker and authority on teaching and parenting, lists reading literary fiction as one of nine habits that is essential to raising an <b>empathetic <\/b>child.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She emphasizes that <i>\u201creading is not only a child\u2019s key to academic and future economic success, it also makes kids kinder\u2014but it is strong literary fiction such as <\/i><i>Charlotte\u2019s Web<\/i><i> or <\/i><i>To Kill a Mockingbird<\/i><i> that causes kids to be more<\/i><b><i> empathetic<\/i><\/b><i>.\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The K in EKG represents <b>Kindness.<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Kindness<b> <\/b>incorporates the virtues of respect, compassion, and gratitude.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>By the way, all are learned (taught\/practiced) behaviors.<b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Several years ago I read a book authored by David R. Hamilton titled \u201cWhy Kindness Is Good for You\u201d (Hay House, 2010).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A year later Hamilton published a blog in the HUFFPOST describing the 5 Beneficial Side Effects of Kindness.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He noted that:<\/p>\n<p><i>1.Kindness makes us happier\u2014often called \u201cHelper\u2019s High.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>2. Kindness gives us healthier hearts\u2014acts of kindness often produce \u201coxytocin\u201d which helps lower blood pressure. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\">3. Kindness slows aging (enough said)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">4. Kindness makes for better relationships; when we are kind to each other, we feel a connection, and new relationships are forged, or existing ones strengthened.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size: 1rem\">5. Kindness is contagious.\u00a0 When we&#8217;re kind, we inspire others to be kind, and it actually creates a ripple effect that spreads outwards to our friends&#8217; friends&#8217; friends<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size: 1rem\">to three degrees of separation.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Many schools have created a \u201cKindness Curriculum\u201d which includes \u201cKindness Projects.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You and your colleagues should review CASEL\u2019s evidence-based <b>Kindness in the Classroom<\/b><b><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/b> a social emotional learning curriculum that now focuses on equity, teacher self-care, and digital citizenship.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/centerhealthyminds.org\/join-the-movement\/sign-up-to-receive-the-kindness-curriculum\">https:\/\/centerhealthyminds.org\/join-the-movement\/sign-up-to-receive-the-kindness-curriculum<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Give your students and others in classrooms and school a \u201dpulse check\u201d \u2013 are all the \u201cplayers\u201d contributing to developing an <b>attitude of gratitude?<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Why?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Because:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gratitude increases resilience and improves sleep<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span> <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Gratitude improves physical and psychological health<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Gratitude reduces aggression and strengthens relationships<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Gratitude teaches \u201c<i>students to be more cooperative, patient, and trusting.\u201d<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You need more evidence?<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at Berkeley surveyed 400 students, ages 12-14, found that students \u201c<i>who were more likely to be <\/i><i>grateful <\/i><i>to others showed higher academic interest, grades, and extracurricular involvement, and had lower interest in risky behaviors.\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Positive parent relationships were also associated with<b> gratitude<\/b> (and probably with many habits of the heart including empathy and kindness.)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Other studies report that youth who deliberately practice <b>gratitude<\/b> have higher GPAs; experience more positive emotions, and, ultimately, go on to live more meaningful lives.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In addition, <b>gratitude<\/b> among middle school students can foster an increased sense of hope and trust in others, and fuel a desire to give back to their community (see empathy and kindness).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let me summarize this EKG blog by quoting Vicki Zakrzewski (<i>Greater Good Magazine<\/i> (2\/02\/2021).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She writes:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Character education provides the \u2018what\u2019 &#8211; the opportunity to think about what virtues they would like to cultivate and what those virtues look like in action.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Students may be able to define and identify qualities such as honesty, gratitude, and integrity, (empathy and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>kindness)s, but do they have the skills to put them into action?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In other words<\/i><b><i>, how do we help kids to not only <\/i>know<i> the good, but to actually <\/i>do<i> the good?\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>HOW?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>READ<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>EMPATHY:<\/b> Michele Borba, <i>Unselfish: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World,<\/i> (Touchstone, 2017)<\/p>\n<p><b>KINDNESS:<\/b> Thomas Lickona, <i>How to Raise Kind Kids: And Get Respect, Gratitude, and a Happier Family in the Bargain, (<\/i>Penguin, 2018)<\/p>\n<p><b>GRATITUDE:<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Robert A.
