DeRoche, Ph.D.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As part of my summer reading, in addition to reading several James Patterson books, I read <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>EXCEPTION to the RULE<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> because the sub-head caught my attention:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>The Surprising Sci<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2022\/08\/Screen-Shot-2022-08-29-at-2.39.02-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-736 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2022\/08\/Screen-Shot-2022-08-29-at-2.39.02-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"176\" height=\"158\" \/><\/a>ence of Character-Based Culture, Engagement, and Performance.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The authors also captured my attention when they wrote:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>\u201cNaming this book <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>Exception to the Rule<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>, we aim to offer a <\/i><b><i>virtue-based approach<\/i><\/b><i> that challenges the traditional carrot-and-stick paradigm.\u201d<\/i> <\/span><span class=\"s1\">(Rea, Stoller, Kolp\u2014McGraw Hill, 2018)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">WHAT?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My career experiences as a teacher and administrator clearly made the case that \u201ccarrots and sticks\u201d were our <i>modus-operandi<\/i> in the classroom and school.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cC&amp;S\u201d were used by parents that I knew, (myself included), and community and professional groups that I served on including two terms on a public school board.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cRewards and punishments\u201d helped us solve problems and make decisions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the book, the authors warn us that \u201ccarrots and sticks\u201d will only take us so far<i>\u2014\u201cthey do not inspire high performance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rules, rewards, and recognitions <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>do not promote excellence<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>.\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I did not know that!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Did you?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But wait, there\u2019s more.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>\u201cTeachers and administrators have to understand that a <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>virtue-based<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i> school culture (virtue means \u2018excellence\u2019) is more powerful than a <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>rule-based<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i> culture.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Here are a few of their views that they want us to think about (implement):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u201cCharacter and virtues move us beyond our personal needs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of the clearest benefits of developing virtues in organizations is <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>increased engagement<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c<i>Character defined by virtue cannot be legislated but can be cultivated.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A virtue-based culture acts as a silent supervisor to mitigate risk without the intended consequence of <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>squashing creativity and growth<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u201cAn extrinsic rule-based approach to ethics (sticks) and extrinsic rewards, recognition (carrots) <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>does not promote excellence<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>.\u201d<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u201c<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>Trust and meaningful relationships<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i> are more important than intrinsic rewards and recognition.\u201c<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What\u2019s wrong with \u201csticks,\u201d they ask? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\">Compliance, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">they answer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Making people \u201ccomply\u201d is costly both in time and money.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their examples: <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c<i>Special education teachers spend 75% of their time in paperwork and meetings in order to comply with well-intended federal legislation\u2026.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u201dRules have there place.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What is missing is an understanding of the limitations of rules.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u201cHeavy-handed rules <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>restrict innovations and creativity<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now the \u201ccarrots.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The authors start with <i>\u201c<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>Engagement<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>-discretionary effort\u2014what people will do when they don\u2019t absolutely have to and when no one is watching or measuring.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>Engagement drives performance<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\">.\u201d<i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The point:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>\u201cExcellent leaders and teams are not governed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They are <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>self-governed<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i> more by virtues than by rules\u201d<\/i> and <i>\u201cfewer rules means that trust is high.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the \u201c roadmap\u201d for the book, the authors describe the \u201cpillars,\u201d seven specific virtues, a chapter for each.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They discuss what each is, how each works, and how each can be developed to support \u201ca life well lived, with <\/span><span class=\"s2\">integrity<\/span><span class=\"s1\">.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Trust<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Compassion<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Courage<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Justice<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Wisdom<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Temperance<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Hope\u2014that support the \u201cpediment\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Integrity<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Under the heading, \u201cWhen Virtue Is Absent,\u201d the authors frame their comments by putting \u201cvice on trial\u201d rather than \u201cvirtue.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What happens to our relationship, they ask, when virtues are missing\u2014\u201cWithout <b>trust<\/b>\u2014what?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Without <b>compassion<\/b>\u2014what?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So their question isn\u2019t \u201ccan we teach virtue?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rather, the real question is: \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">How can we teach virtue better?<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Edward DeRoche, Ph.D., Director<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Character Education Resource Center<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Department of Learning &amp; Teaching \/\/ University of San Diego<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Website:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/charactermatters.sandiego.edu\/\"><span class=\"s4\"><b>http:\/charactermatters.sandiego.edu<\/b><\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s5\">E-mail:<b> <\/b><a href=\"mailto:deroche@sandiego.edu\"><span class=\"s6\"><b>mailto:deroche@sandiego.edu<\/b><\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">August 2022 BLOG<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Edward F.
