<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><i>What activities make you feel the best?<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>How do you feel today?<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>What are some hopes you have for the future?<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>What ways do you feel you learn best?<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><i>When was a time you succeeded at something?<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I am a fan of question-asking.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Q&amp;A fosters curiosity, problem-solving, critical thinking, and self-reflection.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So I asked myself these three questions:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What is journaling?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What are the benefits? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Can teachers use it and, if so, how?<\/p>\n<p>My experience with journaling is making out \u201cTo Do\u201d lists.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, I did what any college professor (or anyone else) would do\u2014I \u201cgoogled\u201d it!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And I am amazed about what I discovered.<\/p>\n<p>The WHAT<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It appears that journaling is part of what some call the \u201cself-care movement.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As several authors wrote:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cJournaling is an outlet for processing emotions and increases self-awareness.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWriting in no stranger to therapy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Writing&#8217;s power to heal lies not in pen and paper, but in the mind of the writer.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyping out journal entries on a laptop or even on a phone can yield effects that are just as positive, particularly if it\u2019s more comfortable and convenient for you.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA journal is not a record of the minute details of your daily life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Instead, it\u2019s a private space for exploring what you think and feel about the people, events, or issues that are important to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The BENEFITS <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The practice of journaling may increase \u201cmindfulness, memory, and communication skills.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In addition it may lead to better sleeping habits, greater self-confidence, and a better understanding of one\u2018s emotions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Here\u2019s a thought:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Have you ever felt better just talking about a problem with your friends or parents?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Well, consider your journal as a friend who is always there.<\/p>\n<p>I found an article published by <i>PositivePsychology.com<\/i> that listed 83 benefits of journaling that \u201ccan help you clear your head, make important connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and even buffer or reduce the effects of mental illness (depression, anxiety, and stress).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The benefits of journaling for children [I am reporting five of the twelve they listed] include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>Exploring and identifying their emotions.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Allowing themselves to feel \u201ctaboo\u201d emotions like anger.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Examining the pros and cons of something to help them make a decision.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Reflecting on their thoughts about something after the fact.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Gaining insight into their own motives and the motives of others.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I may be wrong, but from what I read journaling may be one major anecdote to the abuse of the Internet and social media websites.<\/p>\n<p>HOW Teachers Can Use It? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here is one answer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cTeachers can use journaling as a kind of window into how students are thinking about what they are learning.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is a great assessment tool as well and teachers should learn how to incorporate journaling in their classroom.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I discovered many ways that teachers can use journaling in their classrooms\u2014for assignments, for projects, for assessment purposes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Here are a few suggestions.<\/p>\n<p><i>Motivational journal<\/i><i> that sets your day in a positive direction by reflecting on inspirational quotes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Gratitude journal<\/i><i> that lifts your spirits by focusing on the things you are grateful for. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Writer\u2019s journal<\/i><i> that prompts you to reflect on famous quotations, social issues, or literary themes. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Thematic journal<\/i><i> that invites you to record your thoughts and progress on specific problems or interest areas.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Success journal<\/i><i> that documents today\u2019s triumphs to help cheer you through tomorrow\u2019s slumps<\/i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Free-form journal<\/i><i> that allows you to write about anything and everything, providing insights into how your thoughts and emotions unfold over time<\/i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Writing to heal journal<\/i><i> suggests that writing about emotions and stress can boost immune system.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>In my search, I found so many excellent resources to help teachers use journaling as an instructional strategy that I decided that the December issue of <b>News You Can Use<\/b> should focus on journaling resources and references for teachers and parents.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Something to look forward to!<\/p>\n<p>Edward DeRoche, Ph.D.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span>Director, Character Education Resource Center<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span>Department of Learning and Teaching<br \/>\nSchool of Leadership and Education Sciences<br \/>\nUniversity of San Diego<br \/>\nNovember 2021<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Edward F.
